“I just want to encourage every one of us to realize when we obey God, we’re not doing it for God—I mean, that’s one way to look at it—we’re doing it for ourselves, because God takes pleasure when we’re happy,” she declared in the undated 36-second clip with her husband standing by her side and nodding. “That’s the thing that gives Him the greatest joy…”
“So, I want you to know this morning: Just do good for your own self. Do good because God wants you to be happy,” Osteen continues. “When you come to church, when you worship Him, you’re not doing it for God really. You’re doing it for yourself, because that’s what makes God happy. Amen?”
“In our catecheses, we have often noted that we do not become a Christian on our own, but by being born and nurtured in the faith in the midst of the People of God, that is the Church,” he stated. “She is a true mother who gives us life in Christ, and in the communion of the Holy Spirit, brings us into a common life with our brothers and sisters.”
“The model of motherhood for the Church is the Blessed Virgin Mary, who in the fullness of time conceived through the Holy Spirit and gave birth to the Son of God,” Pope Francis continued. “Her motherhood continues through the Church, who brings forth sons and daughters through baptism, whom she nourishes through the word of God.”
It’s time for something radical to move the church out into the world – all week long. We’ve all heard much about ‘going’ for some years, yet we keep ‘coming’… to buildings on Sunday mornings.
We’ve nothing against buildings or Sunday mornings; we just reckon it’s time to break old mindsets in order to actually be the people who are the extension of the ministry of Jesus – all week long.
It’s time things were turned upside down and inside out. Let the people get out there and be Christ in the world and let the leaders equip, encourage and release them to do so.
In Cornerstone (Norwich) we do meet together – and we do everything a more traditional church would do : worship, pray, receive teaching, etc. We just don’t do it all in one meeting or one building, or at one time of the week.
We value our heritage of worship, faith, and radical Kingdom life – and don’t wish to throw any babies out with the bathwater. We seek the Kingdom first, and believe all things will be added to us as we do so. We want to maintain a Kingdom mindset so as not to get bogged down in parochial or protective local-church ways of thinking.
This presents many challenges. We respect all God has done in previous generations, but see a new thing springing up. Do you not perceive it?
